Healthy Habits with Braces

πŸ“’πŸŒŸ Keep Your Teeth Clean for a Brighter, Healthier Smile! 🌟🦷

While we are crafting your one-of-a-kind smile, you have a few jobs to make sure your treatment goes as smoothly as possible. One of your most important jobs will be maintaining good oral hygiene during the entire time you have braces. After your first bonding appointment we load you up with all the tools and knowledge needed to be a masterful brusher. Food particles and plaque can easily get trapped around brackets and wires, making your teeth susceptible to decay and causing your gums to swell. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

πŸ” Our Expert Tips for a Gleaming Smile with Braces

1.Brushing with Care: Use a soft-bristle toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste and use small circular brushing motions to gently clean around brackets and wires. Pay extra attention to the area between your gums and the bracket to keep plaque at bay and your gums in good condition. It will take you longer to brush your teeth with braces then before. Don’t rush brushing!

2.Flossing is a Must: Don't skip flossing! Floss threaders or a water flosser will make sure you clean out hidden debris between your teeth. Flossing is also important to reduce gum swelling so don’t skip it!

3.Rinse with Mouthwash: Incorporate an antimicrobial mouthwash that contains fluoride into your routine to reduce bacteria. The fluoride helps to strengthen enamel and can wash into the hard-to-reach areas.

4.Healthy Diet Choices: Minimize sticky and sugary foods to avoid complications and protect your teeth from decay. Carbonated beverages and sugary foods can lead to white spot discolorations that are permanent and will take away from your beautiful smile at the end of treatment.

5.Keep Your Regular Appointments: By not missing your appointments, we can help keep a better eye on your oral hygiene and offer pointers to improve before things get too bad. It also means Dr. Schmahl and Dr. Powers can make adjustments that will keep your treatment on time!

Proper Brushing Technique

Start by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and make gentle, circular motions. Brush all around the braces, paying close attention to the area between the braces on the gums. Be sure to take your time. It takes longer to brush your teeth with braces than before you started treatment.

Proper Flossing Technique

To simplify flossing with braces, we will give you floss threaders at your bonding appointment. Start by threading the floss carefully through the loop of the threader. Then, gently insert the threader between the gums and the wire of the braces, pulling until the floss is between your teeth. Do not pull down too far or you will damage the wire or braces!
